MOMBASA, KENYA: A detective has told
the High Court in Mombasa that a hotel
employee admitted killing a British couple
in 2009 to stop them from seeking an
explanation over a loan they advanced to
him.
Detective Patrick Ngeiywa told the high
court in Mombasa on Friday that Daniel
Musyoka, a former employee of Sun N
Sand Beach Resort told him that he killed
the couple to prevent them from asking
him to account for Sh 300,000 they had
given him to buy Swahili house four years
ago.
Chief Inspector Ngeiywa told Justice
Maureen Odero that Mr Musyoka told
him that he knew the couple in 2007
while he was working at the hotel in Kilfi.
“He told me during the year 2007 while
at Sun N Sun he happened to know
Norman Tony Joel together with his wife
Rita Marion Joel during their visit and stay
in Kenya,” said Ngeiywa.
Musyoka and his brother Paul Mutua have
denied that on October 14 2009 at
Mwakirunge in Mombasa County they
murdered the couple Norman Tony Joel
and Rita Marion Joel.
The accused have both denied the
charges and are expected to know their
fate this week when Justice Maureen
Odero who has been presiding their trial
will give her judgment.
Ngeiywa said the couple who were in
their late sixties were repeat visitors to
Kenya who came up with an idea that
they wanted to do business in the village
since they had experience of the village
life.
The officer said the accused told him how
the couple gave him Sh 30,000 to start a
small shop which made him to convert
one of the family room into a shop.
Ngeiywa told the court how the generous
couple gave Musyoka another Sh 20,000
for the sinking of a borehole in the a
area.
The detective said after giving the
accused money they went back to UK and
came back in 2008 when they asked
Musyoka to buy a Swahili house where
they could stay in during the holiday to
have the feeling of a village life.
The accused , the police said approached
his mother and told her about what the
Europeans had told him.
“Muysoka instead of looking for a house
he decided to strike a deal with
somebody to pose as the owner of the
family house they were staying Kwa Bulo
in Mombasa. He asked a friend Suleiman
Ramadhan to pose as the owner of their
family house and when the deal was
finalized Tony paid Musyoka Sh 300,000
in his account at Barclays Bank
Bamburi. After the deal the officer said
the couple went back to UK and came
back in March 2009 and requested to go
and spend the time in the village house
bought. They also asked him how he had
spent the money and wanted to be shown
the sale agreement” said the detective.
The witness said during the investigation
they found that the couple went back to
UK after a short stay in April and came
back in October the same year when
they were murdered.
The police recalled how Musyoka told him
how he gave the couple accommodation
in their Swahili house but they were not
satisfied because the shop they had
spent money on was being occupied by
another woman.
