Three men arrested for eating orang-utan

Three men face up to five years in jail
after being arrested for killing and eating
a wild orang-utan.
The villagers also face fines of £5,500
after they admitted cooking the
endangered animal.
They claim to have found the creature,
believed to have been aged at least 20,
after it had been shot by hunters who’d
mistaken it for a deer.
One of those detained, a 58-year-old
called Hanafi, said the meat was
delicious.
‘Like venison… Tough, but tasty, tastier
than beef and pork,’ he told conservation
workers.
Fellow suspect Ignasius Mandor, 50, said
it was better to eat the animal than leave
it to die in the forest.
The men were arrested by the Natural
Resource Conservation Agency in Borneo,
Indonesia.
Siti Chadidjah Kaniawati, head of the
agency in Pontianak, said they had found
no evidence that the orang-utan had been
shot.
He added: ‘The suspects admitted that
the orang-utan was still alive, showing
some movement, while they cut the
animal.’
Borneo’s orang-utan numbers are
dwindling due to deforestation.
