NAIROBI, KENYA: KTN’s premier
investigative show Jicho Pevu emerged
top in this year’s most searched items in
the Google annual Year End Zeitgeist
report.
Google’s Zeitgeist report is an annual look
at the collective eyes of the world on the
web during a particular year.
Jicho Pevu now a household name in
Kenya presents well researched items
that matter to the society. It’s Key
presenter Mohamed Ali and John Alan
Namu go beyond the obvious to let
Kenyans get to the bottom of issues
affecting them.
This year, Kenyans were more concerned
about ovulation, stress and nutrition as
the three were ranked among the top
searched health topics, with emergence
of new searches on autism. Cancer and
HIV/AIDs remained in the top ten
queries.
Many Kenyans also searched on
devolution, an indication that they want
to learn more about the new system of
governance. Issues on policy, democracy,
revolution, obamacare, security,
nomination, Biometric Voter Registration
(BVR), gubernatorial and county were also
searched under the politics category.
On events, the Kenya Revenue Authority
(KRA)’s sensitization on the new
requirement of tax payment system send
many Kenyans online during the period.
Also, based on the fact that Kenyans
consider the General Election as an
important step in exercising their
democratic right, Independent Electoral
and Boundaries Commission (IEBC)
results announcement came second in
this category.
The Westgate terror attack drew Kenyans
online to search more information on the
siege. In terms of the top trending
events, the IEBC results and the
Westgate attack topped the list. Trending
searches have the highest amount of
traffic over a sustained period.
Musician Emmy Kosgei made it to the top
ten in two categories; top searched
people and her wedding to the top
trending events. Among the top trending
personalities are the late Paul Walker, an
American actor, and the late Ruhila
Adatia, the Kiss TV presenter who died
during the Westgate attack.
Kenyans love for telenovelas was evident
in the trending search for TV programmes
like Abyss of Passion, Amor Bravio, Punar
Vivah and La Fuerza del Destino. Local
productions also generated interest for
google searches with Tujuane and Jicho
Pevu being among the top trending TV
programmes.
